Windows 8 Storage Spaces
When Microsoft killed Windows Home Server's "Drive Extender" technology, we mourned its loss but held up hope that the company would persevere with the concept. The company has done just that with a new Windows 8 feature called Storage Spaces, described in a lengthy post to its Building Windows 8 blog.
With Storage Spaces, physical disks are grouped together into pools, and pools are then carved up into spaces, which are formatted with a regular filesystem and are used day-to-day just like regular disks.
Unlike RAID systems of old, but in common with other modern storage technologies such as Solaris' ZFS and Linux's btrfs, pools can use disks of different interface technologies—USB, SATA, Serial Attached SCSI—and different, mismatched sizes. New disks can be added to a pool at any time. Pools can also include one or more hot spares: drives allocated to a pool but kept in standby until another disk in the pool fails, at which point they spring into life.
Storage in a pool is then distributed among one or more spaces. Each space can have its own redundancy policy, with three kinds of fault tolerance offered: 2-way mirroring, 3-way mirroring, and RAID 5-like parity. With the mirrored options, a space's data is stored either twice or three times within a pool. With the parity option, the system will compute additional information and store this within the pool. If any disk in the pool fails, the data can be reconstructed using this additional information.
Spaces can be thinly provisioned, allowing the creation of spaces that are larger than the underlying pool. This allows potentially simpler management—a large "media" space for TV shows and movies could be created with some large size, say 50 TB, with only 2 TB of physical capacity in the pool. As more shows are recorded or downloaded, and space becomes tighter, additional drives can be added to the pool; the space will then use this extra capacity with no further configuration required.
The new technology appears to be superior to Windows Home Server's Drive Extender technology in just about every regard, and its integration into the core operating system indicates that it's robust enough for mainstream usage. The blog post implies that Storage Spaces are ready even for enterprise workloads, making mention of the ability to scale up to "very large-scale enterprise datacenter[s]", with pools made up of "hundreds of disks"—not a promise anyone would make of the home user-oriented Drive Extender.
Perhaps the only fly in the ointment for most home users is that in Windows 8, Storage Spaces will not be bootable. The company says that guidance will be offered on how to partition disks so that a partitioned boot disk can be added to a pool, but that straightforward booting unfortunately won't be possible. On some levels, this is unsurprising: many advanced filesystem and storage systems are not bootable in their initial version, and Storage Spaces certainly won't be the first. On the other, it would certainly be a desirable addition, as it would ensure that even if a boot disk failed, your PC would remain operational.
The first mention of Storage Spaces were made at Microsoft's BUILD conference in September 2011. At BUILD, the company did not offer significant details about the technology, and spoke of it in relation to Windows Server 8. Judging by the nature of the usage scenarios outlined in the blog post—storing videos and photographs, using USB external disks—it appears that Storage Spaces will be a feature of the desktop operating system too. We've asked Microsoft for clarification on this point.
Update: As expected, Storage Spaces will indeed be a feature of both desktop and server editions of the operating system.
If the feature does indeed ship in desktop Windows, it will overnight obsolete a range of SOHO-oriented storage systems; products like Drobo and ReadyNAS will find it hard to survive in a Windows 8 world.

Next take the following steps:
Open VirtualBox and create a new virtual machine, choose Windows/Windows 8 as the type. If that’s not an option, you need to update VirtualBox. Be certain to pick the version, 32 or 64-bit that matches your download.
During the initial installation process choose to create a virtual disk. You’ll need at least 20GB to get the job done.
For the virtual disk type, I prefer to use VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image), but the others will work as well.
For the virtual disk storage details, I prefer to use a dynamically allocated disk rather than a fixed size virtual disk. That way, if I end up using the VM for production, I don’t need to manually give it more room down the road.
Once the virtual disk created, go to Settings and get ready to start tuning.
In the System > Motherboard setting enable IO APIC.
Set the VM’s memory to 2GBs for a 32-bit Windows 8 instance and at least 4GBs for the 64-bit version. Remember you can’t use all your system’s memory for this.
Change the chipset to ICH9. You may also be able to us the PIIX3 chipset, but I see poorer performance with this setting.
Next, move to System > Processors and enable PAE/NX.
If you have a very fast machine with multiple-cores or CPUs, as I do with my six-cored Intel Core i7, you can set it to run with two or three processors. I use two.
Follow this up by going to System > Acceleration and enable VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging.
Now move to the left menu bar and go down to Display > Video and enable both 3D and 2D acceleration. After you do this you can push the Windows 8 VM’s video memory to 256MB. Do so. Windows 8 needs all the video room it can get.
Hop once more over to the left and under Storage go to your virtual hard drive (.vdi) under the SATA controller and click host I/O cache. While there, your Windows 8 Preview .ISO file should have been mounted already. If it hasn’t been yet, mount with IDE and make sure you’re using IDE with the ICH6 IDE controller.
Now, start running the virtual machine and follow the standard Windows installation instructions. From here on in it should be just like installing Windows 8 on native hardware.

• Hyper-V in Windows 8 Developer Preview
• Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2
• VMware Workstation 8.0.2 for Windows
· Note Do not use the “Easy Install” option when setting up the Windows 8 virtual environment using VMWare Workstation. Use the new virtual machine wizard, and select the option for “Windows 7”.
• VirtualBox 4.1.8 for Windows
· Note Use the VirtualBox config manager to “enable PAE/NX” when setting up the Windows 8 virtual environment.
• Parallels Workstation 6 for Windows
• Parallels Desktop 4 for Windows
• XenDesktop 5.5
Non-functional:
• Microsoft Virtual PC (all versions)
• Microsoft Virtual Server (all versions)

Nesting Hyper-V with VMware Workstation 8 and ESXi 5
As Veeam moves forward and starts to become focused two virtualization platforms, I thought to myself now is the time to work out how I’m going to introduce Hyper-V in my lab environment. I wanted to know if it could be virtualized running inside a VMware virtual machine of some sorts. Veeam has been very successful in presenting its solutions through the use of portable labs running for example on laptops nested under VMware Workstation. We would often have a nested ESX server, vCenter, DC and Veeam apps running on a single laptop and I wanted to know if Hyper-V could be thrown into the mix.
For a long time, I was told it was impossible, and a few months ago, I heard a passing rumour that it would be possible when ESXi 5 came out. I’d also heard that ESXi 5 running on Intel Nehalem or Intel Core i7 was going to allow nested hypervisors to also contain running, nested 64bit virtual machines. So firstly, I went about making sure that when I was due for a new laptop, I would have this Intel architecture, or equivalent AMD, in my system. I also managed to build a lab with the same architecture that I plan to use on the road for events.
By the time I’d gotten a chance to give it a whirl, ESXi had gone GA. What I found from the blogs posted above was there were some great pointers, but when I followed either post’s instructions, all I got was a blank Black Screen like a few other people were reporting. No matter what additional information I gave, it just would not work. Undeterred, I decided to try something different. I installed VMware Workstation 8 instead of ESXi 5 and managed to get a nested Hyper-VM working. At this point, I knew my hardware was going to be compatible with nesting Hyper-V. The blog posts above stated the key to making it work is a feature found in your CPU/BIOS called Intel EPT. Now, I read that if you have Nehalem/Core i7, you should have Intel EPT; the blog posts suggested that it should be enabled through the BIOS. However, I didn’t find this option in either of my system BIOS.
While testing what would work, I decided to use Windows 2008 R2 Standard and enable Hyper-V as a Role rather than install the standalone Hyper-V product. I only did this to make my life easier, but the standalone Hyper-V product is a fine option as well.

Windows 8 Developer Preview download
The Windows Developer Preview is a pre-beta version of Windows 8 for developers. These downloads from dev.windows.com include prerelease software that may change without notice. The software is provided as is, and you bear the risk of using it. It may not be stable, operate correctly or work the way the final version of the software will. It should not be used in a production environment. The features and functionality in the prerelease software may not appear in the final version. Some product features and functionality may require advanced or additional hardware, or installation of other software.
Windows Developer Preview works great on the same hardware that powers Windows Vista and Windows 7:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch
To run Metro style Apps, you need a screen resolution of 1024 X 768 or greater

Hellendoorn Rally 2011 -1-
Evenals vorig jaar mogen we weer diverse lokale rijders begroeten.
